This is the first post on our new blog. Some of you read our travel blog (melissaklas.blogspot.com) that featured highlights from our travels in 2007 and 2008. Based on some of our readers' suggestions, we decided to finish that blog and start one dedicated to our new lives in Sydney. Also, we've shared the other blog with potential employers but this one we'll keep more private and only share it with our family and friends. I couldn't think of a better way to start it than with a post about Australia Day.
Australia Day is celebrated on January 26 and commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. Since it fell on a Monday, we had a nice long weekend to celebrate. This was Klas's first Australia Day and my first one since 1994. It's events like these that it hits me that I had been gone from Australia for so long (yes Mum, I know what you're thinking, "too long"). I was proud to see lots of flags although, according to a news story on TV, most of them were probably made in China. If you have a flag at home, I'm curious to know whether your flag was actually made in your home country.
Anyway, we enjoyed the festivities with old and new friends. Saturday was a little bit of a UTM reunion. One of my college tennis teammates, Katie, visited from America so Katie, Emilie (Aussie teammate and my first roommate at UTM) and I spent the day trading stories, laughing at old times and enjoying the 40 degree day at Bondi Beach. We finished the day with a yummy bar-be-que.

On Sunday we went to a little town called Berrima where we went to a 'Music in the Vines' event. One of my primary and high school friends, Elissa, and her family joined us. It was fun to catch up, drink wine and listen to Australian folk music.
On Monday, the actual Australia Day, we went to the home of an old tennis acquaintance, Siobhan. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture with her and her family since she was busy running around and entertaining but I did get some pictures with some of my old tennis friends, Angela and Cindy, who some of you would recognise.
You would have seen in the last post on our travel blog that we've had a lot of get-togethers with friends and family. I'm really enjoying being home although I miss my family and friends overseas.
We're still looking for jobs. Klas has an interview tomorrow and I'm hoping to be shortlisted for a position with interviews taking place next week. We really enjoyed our last jobs before leaving America. We've learned a lot about ourselves too over the last couple of years so I keep telling myself to be patient and wait for the right opportunity to come along. Fingers crossed that the right opportunity will come soon!
